National Cyber Security Awareness Month (#NCSAM) is designed to heighten awareness about the vital importance security plays for individuals and businesses. According to the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), “our homes, societal well-being, economic prosperity and nation’s security are impacted by the internet,” so it is imperative that all of us “Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT.” Not just in October, but all year.

Once NCSAM 2019 ends, the NCSA will continue to help small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) – the backbone of the American economy – continue to Own IT. Secure IT., and Protect IT. Why? Even though a 2019 data breach report from Verizon found that 43 percent of breaches involved small business victims, most SMBs have limited budgets and staff to address threats. That is why they created the CyberSecure My Business™ national program to help SMBs learn how to be safer and more secure online.  They engage with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Small Business Administration (SBA), Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and others to offer a series of workshops based on the NIST Cybersecurity Framework to help SMBs:

  • Identify and understand the business assets cybercriminals will most likely target;
  • Learn how to protect those assets;
  • Detect when something has gone wrong;
  • Respond quickly to minimize impact and implement an action plan; and
  • Learn what resources are needed to recover.
